POSITION TITLE

R&D Chemist (Biodegradables) Performance Colorants & Ingredients

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for inventing, leading, developing/validating, and commercializing new growth products within our innovation process (new product invention and development). The position requires a strong aptitude and desire for experimental work in developing biodegradable materials, use of scientific method, and clear communication of results. The applicant will also be involved across the entire spectrum of new product development: customer contact, ideation, proof of concept, development, validation, regulatory, intellectual property, pilot plant, process development, product support, and technical sales support. This R&D based position will be supported (and responsible to manage) at least one technical administrative associate. The position is located at Milliken & Company's corporate headquarters in Spartanburg SC and reports to the R&D Manager for PCI. Occasional to frequent visits to external customers, production facilities, and conferences are expected (less than 15%).

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage laboratory, laboratory safety, equipment, and administrative technical associates
  • Manage projects with cross functional teams (from inception to commercialization)
  • Invent, protect, contribute, and/or implement key growth products
  • Become technology leader in key technical areas including biodegradation
  • Defend current business, and win new business via customer problem solving, new ideas, product development, competitive assessment, and application value measurement
  • Support our product quality, cost, and manufacturing processes
  • Learn and apply new applications, technologies, and method development
  • Independently lead projects and laboratory experiments
  • Secure sustainable solutions via IP
  • Active member of laboratory safety and quality community (lead and/or contribute)

 

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

  • Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal chemistry, Chemical biology, Polymer chemistry, or biochemistry with demonstrated achievements developing and testing biodegradable products
  • 5+ years of experience in industry, postdoctoral or governmental
  • Working knowledge of bacterial metabolic pathways
  • Strong history as an experimentalist using scientific method and characterization along with working knowledge of NMR, FTIR and MS
  • Record of independent invention and turning them into innovation, creativity, and collaborative achievements
  • Record of the clear communication of scientific achievements (publications, presentations, or patents)
  • Strong communication/presentation skills and communication of value/implications
  • History of collaborative spirit, leadership, critical thinking, and organizational skills

 

QUALIFICATIONS – PREFERRED     

  • Experience running tests to assess product biodegradation such as OECD 301 or 302
  • Working knowledge of dissolved organic carbon and total oxygen consumption testing
  • Experience with consumer package goods formulated products
  • Application knowledge or technology knowledge of personal, household and fabric care
  • Application knowledge or technology knowledge of polyurethane foams
  • Successful history in bringing inventions to commercial success
  • Technology knowledge in: Analytics, Fluorescence, Stabilizers, UV-absorbers, Coatings, Colorants, Polymers, Formulation, and Fragrance
