POSITION TITLE

Principal Engineer

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Principal Engineer is accountable for designing of chemical manufacturing processes and related improvements, leading design efforts, supporting new product development with knowledge and engineering capabilities, and acting as a technical resource for the plants.  The position reports within the Chemical Division Process Development Group and will work closely with plant leadership, engineering, and R&D resources.  A successful candidate will need to be able to work in a flexible environment of support activities and project leadership.  This position can be located out of the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, SC.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design of Chemical Processes
    • Develop process designs to comply with recognized codes, applicable standards, and good engineering practices
    • Unit operations selection
    • Process equipment selection and specification
    • Material and energy balance
    • Process Safety Management design
    • Participate in reviews related to process design including Design Package reviews,   Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Incident Investigations, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)
    • Provide process engineering design through Front End Loading stages 1,2 & 3
    • Material Reactivity and Thermal Hazard Assessment
    • Emergency Relief System Design and Validation
    • Facility Siting Assessments

 

  • Design phase project management
    • Complete Process Design Packages to support process improvements or capital project which includes PFD and P&ID development, general arrangement plans, equipment and instrumentation process spec sheets and preliminary Process control strategies
    • Coordinate and participate in design reviews with 3rd party engineering firms
    • Perform technical bid analysis of returned quotes
    • Coordinate design deliverables from 3rd party engineering firms to support the Project Manager in the development of the project budget, schedule, and risk matrix
  • Development of programming controls
  • Support of New Product Development as it pertains to manufacturability and eventual commercialization
  • Project evaluation of capital and variable cost estimations
  • Construction check-out and start-up activities, including transfer of technology packages and training

 

QUALIFICATIONS – REQUIRED

  • BS in Chemical Engineering with 5+ years of experience
  • Understanding and experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) requirements
  • Adept at Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA)
  • Prior experience using DIERS Methodologies for Relief System Design
  • Knowledge of process control systems and cost/benefits analysis
  • In-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards such as NFPA, ASME, API, IEC, PSM, RMP along with consistent application of RAGAGEP
  • Knowledge of sound engineering practices, including Aspen or equivalent simulation software
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (estimated at 20-25%)

 

QUALIFICATIONS – PREFERRED

  • Experience in Project Management Methodologies
  • Professional Engineering License (Multi-state licensing may be needed)
  • Experience in product development/process engineering
  • Prior experience working with ISO9001, Responsible Care, ISO14001, or SOCMA registered facility
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
