Milliken is seeking an Industrial Microbiologist to become the subject matter expert for microbial risk assessment and control within our Chemical Division, which supplies specialty chemicals to industrial and consumer applications in addition to antimicrobials incorporated into treated articles.

This role has primary responsibility, for support of our existing business, to ensure products meet specifications for biological activity by:

  1. Coordination of product bioburden testing
  2. Recommendation of preservative selection based on product type and application
  3. Manufacturing assistance for appropriate industrial hygiene practices
  4. Coordination and execution of regularly scheduled audits, sampling, and education at the manufacturing sites

The position is located at our corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, SC and reports to the Global Director of Regulatory Affairs.



Microbial quality assurance testing

  • Testing and setting specifications, demonstrate efficacy, stability, and sensitivity
  • Design and validate testing protocols
  • Manage microbial lab operations and technicians


  • Collaborate on the selection of biocides in product formulations (global regulations, chemical and microbiological product stability, performance requirements, etc.)
  • Establish product packaging, sampling, storage, and handling requirements

Process validation

  • Conduct microbiology and industrial hygiene audits (internal and external)
  • Support the manufacturing sites by providing training, participation in process risk assessments and in development of cleaning and sanitization procedures
  • Lead microbial failure investigations analysis and corrective actions
  • Provide technical support during customer audits and regulatory agency inspections

Product support

  • Participate in customer complaint investigations and corrective actions
  • Testing protocol validation with major multinationals
  • Provide support to the sales and development teams to interpret testing results of treated articles and evaluate new potential actives



  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the following:
    • In-can preservation of industrial and consumer products
    • Industrial plant process and product hygiene
    • Managing operation of microbiology lab and technical associates
  • Working knowledge and practical experience with good laboratory practices in a microbiology   lab environment and competent with techniques such as Gram staining, isolation plating, media preparation, and microorganism identification methods.
  •   Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and guidelines, including EPA, FDA, and EU BPR
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to independently define and execute critical studies, and to develop and communicate recommendations
  • Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and actionable manner


The successful candidate will have strengths in the following:

  • Efficacy testing of antimicrobials and biocides in consumer treated articles such as textiles, plastics, foams, as well as medical devices, against bacteria and fungi
  • Understanding and experience with Ames mutagenic assay
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a matrix organization with strong relationship, networking and collaboration skills
