Director of Development, Decor



Director of R&D will lead innovation in design and construction for the Décor Business unit which includes the Commercial and Residential markets (Office, Hospitality, Healthcare, Indoor, and Outdoor segments). They will strive to create a competitive advantage through value add and winning platforms: yarns, fabric constructions, finishes, and overall concepts. Successful candidates will have a “blue sky” approach that is creative, innovative, and technical. They will hold a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and thrive in a results-driven environment with the desire and ability to grow Milliken’s market share. This position will report to the VP of the Business Unit. Position will be located at Milliken headquarters in Spartanburg, SC.




  • Lead innovative initiatives for the business unit, selling those initiatives to customers as well as within the team and up and down the chain of command
  • Lead team of project support, product testing and technical design associates and consultants
  • Work with and qualify existing and new supply chain partners to develop sustainable new textile components and platforms
  • Develop new yarns, fabric constructions, and finishing techniques that give Milliken a competitive edge and fit Milliken’s long-term environmental and sustainability goals
  • Manage new product development ideas from concept to launch through the stage-gate process
  • Research innovations that are happening within other Milliken segments and envision how that can be applied to the Decor business
  • Collaborate with design and sales to update business justifications and rapidly develop customer centric products
  • Generate profit for the company through creative and efficient use of resources, design, finishing, and manufacturing
  • Manage stage-gate projects to meet target objective by assessing, prioritizing, navigating, and quickly adapting to changes until goals are met
  • Communicate effectively with vendors, customers, management, manufacturing, design, and sales
  • Interface with customers and suppliers to develop strategic partnerships with new innovations
  • Travel to shows, customers, and supply partners to effectively grow business at a rapid pace




  • BA/BS Degree in a Textile Related Field.  MBA Preferred.
  • 15+ years textile product development experience, ideally in the contract, residential indoor and outdoor, hospitality, and/or healthcare markets
  • Successful prior management of Product Development team(s)
  • Experience managing and working within a Stage-Gate development process
  • Experience with a wide variety of materials, fibers, yarns, finishes, and technical constructions of fabrics.
  • Must have extensive experience with yarn development, fibers, and dyeing as well as exposure to solution dyed manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of complex weaves and constructions and a variety of finishing capabilities preferred
  • Experience working with vendors, dye labs, finishing, and manufacturing both internally and externally
  • Ability to strategize with sales, marketing, design, and manufacturing to find successful customer solutions
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work autonomously with the company’s goals and targets in mind, work in a collaborative team environment, and interact with peers of all levels in a respectful manner
  • Proactive approach to creatively solving problems with a focus on solutions while gaining support from design, manufacturing, and finishing
  • Strong presentation skills to customers, peers, and business leadership
