Position Summary:
The Maintenance Engineer plays a key role in maintaining mechanical and utility systems across the plant to ensure safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operations. Reporting directly to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, this role is responsible for executing and optimizing preventive maintenance, managing equipment reliability, participating in capital projects, and enforcing high standards of safety and compliance. The engineer will also develop SOPs, supervise daily activities, coach technicians, and act as a critical interface between operations, maintenance, and engineering.
Functional Responsibilities:
Mechanical, Static & Rotating Equipment Responsibilities
- Perform inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance on both static equipment (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, piping, filters, strainers) and rotating equipment (pumps, blowers, compressors, gearboxes, agitators, fans).
- Develop and execute Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) programs for mechanical assets using CMMS tools.
- Ensure proper alignment, balancing, lubrication, vibration analysis, thermography, and bearing monitoring for rotating equipment.
- Lead or assist in major overhauls and turnaround activities for critical plant assets, coordinating contractor scopes and safety procedures.
Statutory Compliance & MOM Inspections
- Plan and coordinate statutory inspections for pressure vessels, lifting equipment, and steam systems in accordance with MOM requirements, SS651, and the WSH (General Provisions) Regulations.
- Liaise with Authorized Examiners (AE) and inspection bodies to ensure compliance with inspection intervals and proper documentation.
- Maintain and update registers and certificates for regulated equipment; ensure readiness for MOM audits and EHS inspections.
- Support Permit-To-Work (PTW) and confined space entry procedures, including risk assessment and isolation verification.
Reliability Engineering & Continuous Improvement
- Implement equipment reliability strategies including RCFA, RCM, and FMEA.
- Identify and address recurring failures; recommend design modifications, material upgrades, or operational changes to improve uptime.
- Lead “bad actor” analysis and propose long-term corrective actions with measurable outcomes (e.g., MTBF/MTTR improvements).
- Track and analyze key reliability metrics, and support KPI reporting to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager.
Safety, Audit & Compliance Responsibilities
- Ensure strict adherence to all HSE policies, procedures, and Milliken’s Safety Absolutes in daily operations.
- Participate in safety programs including PTW, LOTOTO, JHA, incident investigations, safety inspections, and emergency drills.
- Support internal and external audits, including those related to MOM, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and SS651.
- Identify and mitigate risks through hazard identification, near-miss reporting, and follow-up on corrective actions.
SOP Development & Documentation
- Develop, review, and maintain SOPs, work instructions, and maintenance checklists for all mechanical and utility systems.
- Ensure SOPs reflect best practices, regulatory compliance, and lessons learned from incidents or RCAs.
- Provide technical input and training to technicians to ensure SOPs are effectively followed.
Team Supervision & Task Management
- Supervise daily activities of mechanical technicians and in-house contractors to ensure timely execution of maintenance tasks.
- Assign and track job tasks using CMMS and job sheets; ensure resource availability and schedule adherence.
- Coach and mentor technicians on job execution, safety, and troubleshooting practices.
- Monitor contractor performance and always enforce safe work practices.
- Lead daily toolbox meetings and coordinate manpower planning, especially during shutdowns or emergency work.
General Responsibilities
- Participate in shutdown planning and execution to ensure timely completion of mechanical work.
- Lead or support small-to-medium capital projects including scoping, budgeting, vendor management, installation, and commissioning.
- Work closely with operations, E&I engineers, and vendors to align maintenance strategies with production needs.
- Participate in HSE activities such as LOTOTO, incident investigations, and audits.
Technical Skills/Experience/Background/Traits:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 5 years in experience in maintenance experience in chemical, pharmaceutical, or process manufacturing environments.
- Proven expertise in handling rotating/static equipment, piping systems, and mechanical utilities.
- Experience with CMMS (e.g., SAP, MVP) and maintenance planning.
- Previous experience in performing equipment and instrument reliability studies, Preventive Maintenance Programs, and making recommendations for long term improvements.
- Knowledge of statutory regulations including SS651, WSH Act, and MOM inspection protocols.
- Familiar with predictive maintenance techniques and reliability engineering principles.
- Superior interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and strong team orientation.
