POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the leadership of the Human Resource Manager the Occupational Nurse is responsible for adequate administration of occupational health and wellness activities for the worksites he/she has been assigned. The occupational nurse in chemical manufacturing will have responsibilities for multiple worksites.

 

The work schedule for this role is Monday – Friday, 1st shift.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Nurse will do all screening for new hires/temps (drug screen, medical history review, vital signs, audiometric exam, pulmonary function exam, hearing conservation and respirator education, etc.) but will work with plant physician for clearance of associate – especially those who meet referral criteria according to physician signed standing orders. 
  • Perform RTW physicals on associates who have been out of work for greater than 2 weeks.  RTW physical will consist of urine drug screen and review of fit for duty form provided by treating physician.    
  • Responsible for all occupational surveillance testing and associate record-keeping, surveillance, and follow-up.
  • Coordinate referrals to pulmonologists and other physicians as needed and recommended by medical surveillance results. 
  • Nurse to adjust work schedule as needed to see off-shift associates for mandatory testing.
  • Maintain, organize, and audit medical records for all assigned locations.
  • Maintain HIPPA, and privacy for medical records and personally discussed issues.
  • Available to assess injuries.  All work-related injuries no matter how slight should be assessed by the nurse.  
    • Nurse will be on call 24/7 via phone and if possible, should return to the plant if the injury warrants further assessment or additional medical care beyond first aid.  If injury is severe, nurse will meet associate at hospital and remain with him/her. If injury requires medical care nurse will report to Liberty Mutual and manage follow-up process.
  • Nurse to conduct random urine drug screen within the first year of hire/random monthly list pulled per policy.
  • Nurse will conduct surveillance urine drug screens on associates who have completed substance abuse rehabilitation to retain employment.
  • Sponsor an annual flu clinic to help associates obtain flu vaccinations & update the SCDHEC Vaccine registry for all flu vaccinations administered.
  • Teach bloodborne pathogens annually to all first responders.
  • Teach CPR/First/Aid/AED at least quarterly to keep responders current and to train new responders.
  • Monitor training records for all first responders and ensure that training is current.
  • Schedule Emergency Medical Responder Training as EMR’s require refresher training and initial certifications.  Training for EMR’s is good for 3 years.  BLS for 2 years.  Nurse able to teach refresher BLS. 
  • Delegate audits of first aid cabinets (If locations use cabinets) and AED units to first aid and EMR Trained associates.  
  • Monitor clinic supply needs and will send requested orders to the supply clerk for entry into the SAP Order System.
  • Serve as the liaison for the Blood Connection and the Upstate Chemical Plants to have regular blood drives.
  • Work with Spartanburg Regional to schedule annual mobile mammography for associates if enough interest.           
  • Work with associates to promote health and wellness (health fairs, bp checks, lunch and learn, etc.)
  • Be available in clinic to assess associate needs both personal and medical.
  • Educate regarding health and wellness – hypertension, diabetes, etc.
  • Provide resources for associates – vocational rehab, employee assistance, tobacco cessation, health advocate, etc.
  • Be actively involved in Plant Safety Process. 
  • Work with medical director to draft standing orders to practice.  Standing orders should be updated and signed annually.
  • The nurse will maintain all certifications to keep professional certifications active. The nurse will keep certification classes on the schedule well before the class is needed and review with Human Resource Manager.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Prefer 2-year associate degree, or 4-year bachelor’s degree or relevant experience.
  • Ability to read and prepare a variety of documents and reports including requisitions, Leave of Absence (General and FMLA), Insurance (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, & COBRA) and other office correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with other associates, vendors, and the public, while exhibiting poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Proficient in PC hardware components, desktop operation system software, application software, Human Resource SAP, and Microsoft Office.
  • Able to work alone on broad variety of projects.
  • Able to handle customer visits and requirements.
  • Ability to travel from plant to plant as need, some overnight travel might be required as well.
