Wellington Plant, Bury is part of Milliken’s Textiles Division and is a multi-award-winning textile manufacturer supplying fabric products into Airbag systems for automotive vehicles. Shipping to over forty locations in twenty countries, we contribute to saving three thousand lives per year and prevent over thirty thousand life changing injuries. As a showcase site for our Performance Solutions Business, we regularly host visits from multinational companies as well as being a host site for events involving the Manufacturing Institute and Onsite Insights. We are currently recruiting for an Engineering Service Manager, to be a key member of the Management team with responsibility for the smooth running of the Bury facility. This includes leading a team of multi-skilled engineers to maximise the availability of all machinery in the production area and maintain the upkeep of the site. The Engineering Manager is also accountable for setting the Maintenance and Engineering strategy for the site.

Reporting to the Director – European Airbag Products, the Engineering Manager shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Working with the European Airbag Products Team to support all aspects of building maintenance, process equipment maintenance, contractor control, process equipment performance, services and supplies.
  • Recruiting, organising, leading, supporting and coaching direct engineering associates in their daily, planned and breakdown response activities.
  • Monitoring machine downtime and taking all possible steps to minimise loss of production capability using a zero-loss methodology.
  • Following up on engineering activities during any equipment downtime ensuring ‘right first time ‘philosophy is always adhered to.
  • Working with the production colleagues across the site to ensure high quality engineering services are provided.
  • Redesigning processes and ways of working to meet long term objectives
  • Participating in daily meetings and responsibility for allocated follow up actions. 
  • Taking responsibility for the Visual Standards of all Engineering plant areas and other Engineering equipment.
  • Supporting all plant continuous improvement activities, striving for Operational Excellence.
  • Leadership of allocated sections(s) of the Risk Management System.
  • Identifying continuous improvement opportunities to assist with control of costs and drive quality and safety performance.
  • Taking responsibility for incident situation and OOH (Out of Hours) decision making
  • Ensuring Engineering cost control including discretional spend and overtime.
  • Controlling the use of spare parts and monitoring inventory levels to ensure that the business meets agreed budgets.
  • Investigating new supplies of parts and materials to provide optimum quality at the lowest cost.
  • Identifying and maintaining critical spares for all machinery.
  • Supporting the site and departmental 5s programme.
  • Acting as a key user of Engineering systems such as CMMS (Agility) supporting preventative and daily team maintenance.
  • Performing regular appraisals and setting clear performance standards within the Engineering.  
  • To circulate communications through briefings with the team.
  • Promote the health and wellbeing of the engineering employees and ensure all Occupational Health appointments are attended.


Knowledge and Skills


You’ll already be working within an automotive, textile or fast paced manufacturing environment,  and ideally have at least 2 years’ experience in a similar role.

  • Educated to HND/HNC Level or equivalent Engineering qualifications.
  • Multi-skilled with electrical bias, strong mechanical skills and proficient on hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • People Leader with a focus on development for the team.
  • Self-motivated with a knowledge of automotive/textile markets.
  • Proficient with a range of Microsoft applications, CMMS software packages such as Agility and familiar with SAP.
  • Experience in the use  of PLC logic and diagnostics in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to use own initiative to make decisions which may impact the business, but can be clearly justified
  • Integrated team player with a strong sense of ownership and commitment.
  • Ability to take responsibility for control of contractors onsite, including inductions and to own the permit to work system.
  • Confident in developing internal customer relationships.
  • Able to demonstrate a hands-on approach and perform in a multi-disciplined engineering environment.
  • Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of steam generating equipment.
  • Analytical with good problem-solving skills and an understanding of statistical process control.
  • Able to work across different levels of the business
  • Committed to driving best practise in Safety and Operational Excellence
  • An understanding of textiles from yarn preparation to fabric finishing with a knowledge of fabric formation would be advantageous.


This a management role with relevant KPI’s and you will be asked to represent Milliken at an accountable level. In return, the role will provide the right person the opportunity to develop their skills and grow both personally and within the business environment. You may already be working within an automotive textile related industry and want to increase your responsibilities working alongside the business and production teams.

Some domestic and international travel is a requirement of this role.
